On 5 October Wizards of the Coast announced on DailyMTG the biggest shake-up to Magic boosters since Play Boosters replaced Draft and Set boosters. It starts with Nauctis: The Sunken Realm, the first set of 2027, out on 5 February, and brings three changes: God Packs stuffed with rares, Japan Showcase cards in the regular pack, and the end of the guaranteed foil. Star City Games and GosuGamers report the same figures.
What is in a God Pack
It is a pack made entirely of rares and mythics. These are the odds and contents Wizards has published:
- Booster Pack: 1 in 1,000. One God Pack celebration card, 10 non-foil rares or mythics, 2 non-foil Booster Fun rares or mythics and 2 traditional foil Booster Fun rares or mythics.
- Collector Booster: 1 in 300. The celebration card, a foil land, 3 foil default-frame rares or mythics, 3 non-foil Booster Fun and 5 foil Booster Fun rares or mythics.
- Universes Beyond sets will not get God Packs until 2028.
With today’s 36-pack boxes, that works out at roughly one God Pack every 28 boxes; for 12-pack Collector boxes, about one every 25. Wizards has not yet shown what the celebration card looks like or whether it is tournament legal.
What goes away
To make room, foil commons and uncommons leave the regular pack, and with them the promise of at least one foil per pack. In return, Wizards says rare and mythic foils will show up more often, though it has not given the new rate. Collector Boosters lose two foil commons and one foil uncommon per pack. Play Boosters are also being renamed plain “Booster Packs”.
The other change favours the cheaper pack: Japan Showcase versions, so far exclusive to Collector Boosters, can now appear in traditional foil in the regular pack’s wildcard slot. No odds have been published for that either.
What it means for collectors
Recommended prices do not change, so you will pay the same for a pack that, on average, holds fewer foils and a better shot at a jackpot. For players and set completionists, low-rarity foils from pre-Nauctis sets will no longer be replenished and could climb in price. For people opening to resell, a box’s value will be even more concentrated in a handful of cards. If you track Magic sets card by card, the full card list and prices for every set will show you how those foils move once February comes round.
