Magic's big Marvel crossover for 2027 now has a date. At its New York Comic Con panel on 9 October, Wizards of the Coast unveiled Marvel: Darkhold Destiny, and confirmed the details on DailyMTG the next day: the set releases on 9 April 2027 and preorders are open. One outlet reported 7 April; Wizards' own product page and Scryfall both say the 9th.
Wizards calls it the first Universes Beyond set built with Marvel around an original story rather than an existing comic. According to Marvel, the plot spans nearly thirty dimensions and centres on Doctor Strange, Thor, Hela and Dormammu. A new tie-in comic by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly comes out digitally in February, with the print edition landing in launch week.
First cards and mechanics
Scryfall already lists the first previews under the code MDD. The namesake card, The Darkhold, is a legendary artifact that draws you more and more cards at a cost in life, and can drop every player's life total to the lowest one at the table. Hela, Magik (a double-faced card that flips into Darkchild), Penance Stare, Rise from the Nether and Temple of Khonshu, a dual land that cares about controlling a Dimension, have also been shown.
Two ideas stand out. Vengeance sorceries can only be cast from your graveyard and are exiled afterwards, like Dark Tutor, the other half of the Hela card. And Arcane spells return with modes paid for in points: Hela's Arcanum lets you pick up to five points' worth of effects, repeating the same one if you like.
What you can preorder, and what comes first
- Booster Packs, Collector Boosters, a Bundle and an Arcanum Bundle.
- Draft Night, a four-player draft box.
- Commander decks plus a Collector's Edition; EDHREC names them Strange Academy, Gods of Asgard, Midnight Sons and Lords of Hel.
- Two Scene Boxes: Assault on Asgard and Skirmish at the Sanctum.
Wizards has not shared prices or print languages yet. Before the set, the Secret Lair Countdown Kit: Marvel's History of Heroes goes on sale on 2 November at 9am Pacific (5pm UK, 6pm in most of the EU): 30 cards from more than 30 artists, $199.99, limited quantity, according to EDHREC and Bleeding Cool. The same outlets say Doctor Doom-themed Doomsdrops are coming, with no date yet. The Doom promo card handed out by Regal Cinemas with Avengers: Doomsday is US only.
What it means for collectors
April 2027 sits between Nauctis (5 February) and Kamigawa: Titanbreach (4 June), so that is three sets in four months; they are all on the release calendar. Boosters also change in 2027, as we covered in our God Packs story. If you collect Marvel, your first date is the 2 November Secret Lair: Countdown Kits tend to sell out. Once the set reaches the catalogue, its cards will appear in the full card list and prices for every Magic set, and you can track what you open in your collection.
