European duelists get the next Yu-Gi-Oh! core booster first. Beyond the Brave is listed by Konami Europe for Thursday 8 October, one day before the general launch in the Americas on Friday 9 October, where Official Tournament Stores can sell it from the 7th. It is a 100-card set with an obvious lead: Joey Wheeler, and his habit of betting the whole duel on a coin.
What's inside: Joey, Destiny HERO and Atlantis
The card the set is built around is Dark Time Wizard, a Quick-Play Spell with two effects, as Konami describes it on its official site. The first fetches another card from your Deck that mentions it. The second tosses a coin: call it right and every monster your opponent controls is destroyed; call it wrong and, as ICv2 reports, yours are the ones that go. Alongside it comes Red-Eyes Black Dragon Exceed, a 3400 ATK Fusion Monster that shrugs off Spell and monster effects your opponent activates.
- Destiny HERO: fresh support for Aster Phoenix's deck, led by Destiny HERO - Destro-Dogma.
- Atlantis and Daedalus: a WATER package built around Umi.
- Ashtra: a new Trap-driven strategy that brings out its monsters by showing your opponent one of your face-down cards.
- One-offs for existing decks: Endymion, Clown Crew and Predaplant each get a card, and Audhumla, Progenitor of the Frozen Expanse is a world premiere.
Rarities: 100 cards and 25 Starlight Rares
The official split is 10 Secret Rares, 14 Ultra Rares, 26 Super Rares and 50 Commons. The chase layer sits on top: five cards also come as an extended-art Ultra Rare and as a Starlight Rare, and twenty more can be pulled as Starlight Rares. That makes 25 Starlights in one set, and that is where the money will be for anyone opening boxes.
Konami lists packs at $4.49 in the United States. The European product page gives no recommended price, so in the UK and the eurozone it comes down to each retailer.
What it means if you collect
If you play in the Americas, the date to note is 9 October: Konami marks it as the day the cards become tournament legal. If you collect, the usual rule for a brand-new set applies: presale prices swing hard in the first week, and singles tend to cost more on release day than a fortnight later. Unless you need a card for that weekend's event, waiting rarely hurts.
Beyond the Brave is already in the TCGJoin catalogue, with all 100 cards and the alternate versions known so far, so you can tick off pulls from your very first pack. Opening a box? Scanning the cards with your phone beats typing them in; they then live in your collection, with the rest of the game in the Yu-Gi-Oh! section.
